Matt, the owner, had a vision for Fundy Woods and it was a place where you can expect the best in comfortable wilderness camping. He’s also committed to continuous improvement in fulfilling this vision and spends the off-season adding more and more amenities to this already incredible property. His sprawling wooded property is nestled on a hill just behind the village, in Fundy-St. Martins North. Tell us about the property that we now call Fundy Woods. I bought the property in multiple land purchases between 2007 and 2013. All three properties are connected, but the campground is situated on a 74-acre piece of land, currently taking up about 25 acres. All of the properties total about 200 acres, so we’ve got plenty of room to grow and develop for our campers and visitors, like putting in more nature trails, and connecting to local ATV trails…the possibilities are endless. Any historical significance here? The piece of property that the campground now sits on was originally a potato farm somewhere between the 1920s and 40s. It was owned by the Miller family, some of whom still live in the area. We even found some old pieces of farm equipment here when we started building Fundy Woods. We found a yoke, which allowed animals to pull farming equipment, like a plow, along with wagons and carriages. How about you, Matt? How did you end up here in St. Martins? It all started when I met a fellow named Gerald while I was working in Edmonton. Listening to him talk about St. Martins as he was preparing to move “back home” and helping him find a house here got me thinking. Then seeing how affordable the land was and being drawn to the forest, the ocean, the bustling summers in the village - I was sold just by the picture he painted in my head! It started with 7.5 acres, which I bought sight unseen before ever setting foot in New Brunswick. At that time, I wasn’t planning on building a campground, but Gerald put the idea in my head and I could see the need for something new and different in this growing tourist town. The village lacked a quiet, peaceful camping option. Now that the Fundy Woods vision has come to life, what are you enjoying most about running a campground? I don’t think I’ve slowed down enough to let it all sink in. The next project or expansion is always on the horizon around here. That being said, I enjoy meeting people from all over, hearing their stories about how they came to be in St. Martins, and how they enjoy it here at Fundy Woods - it’s fulfilling. I envisioned Fundy Woods to be unique in comparison to other campgrounds in the area, and that’s exactly what I’m hearing from our campers. They enjoy the privacy you get here, and the fact that they have room to just relax and breathe and enjoy nature at its finest. I camped all across the country. I camped for work. I camped my way here. I know what it's like out there, and I wanted to give people something different. I’ve even got my mom and dad spending their summers here now, and they love it as much as I do. They like relaxing on the deck, meeting all the people we have coming in and they’ve been a huge help to me around the campground.
